RaPAL Advocate: East Midlands, England
Sandie Stratford
My interest in literacy grew out of a fascination with Linguistics, which I studied at Reading University. I then trained to teach Primary, began my teaching career in Secondary, and took up voluntary work in Adult Basic Education whilst raising my family. Since literacy moved to the top of the government agenda in the late 1990s, developing and maintaining a ‘social practice’ approach has become my focus. Now in Initial Teacher Training, I find myself advocating the plural nature of literacies, and negotiating the space for written literacies in a multi-modal world. On a personal level, I am working at reducing my carbon footprint – yes, I’m the one who turns out the lights and reduces the heating.
